Starfish Point

A Stop on Your Private Charter

Description

Starfish Point is a quiet, shallow sandbar near Rum Point on Grand Cayman’s north side, known for its big population of bright orange starfish. The water is calm and knee-to-waist deep, so it’s an easy, relaxed stop — good for families, photos, and a swim.

You’ll see starfish resting on the sandy bottom, plus fish, sea turtles, and birdlife around the sea grass. It’s the kind of stop guests don’t expect and then end up loving.

Starfish Point Questions, Answered

What you can and cannot do at the sandbar, and the best time to go.

You can gently touch them while they stay in the water, but you must never lift one out, not even for a photo. Starfish breathe through the water, and lifting them out can harm or kill them. Your captain will show you how to admire them safely.

Starfish take in oxygen from the water, so being lifted out suffocates them. It’s also against Cayman Islands environmental rules and carries heavy fines. Keep them submerged and everyone, including the starfish, has a good day.

No. All beaches in the Cayman Islands are free and public. On a charter you’re paying for the private boat and captain that take you there, not for entry.

Yes, though it’s more about the starfish than coral. The water is calm and shallow, so you can wade or float and watch the starfish resting on the sandy bottom. It’s very easy and great for kids.

Very shallow. It’s often knee to waist deep near the sandbar, dropping off a little further out. That’s what makes it such a relaxed, family-friendly stop.

Mid-morning to early afternoon, when the sun lights up the shallows and the starfish are easy to spot. On a private charter we time it to avoid the busiest periods, especially on cruise-ship days.
