Did you know coral is an animal? Many think it is a plant! Corals are tiny marine animals that form large colonies called reefs, which are crucial ecosystems supporting about 25% of all ocean life. They are not plants but are related to jellyfish and sea anemones and are made of individual polyps that create a hard, calcium carbonate skeleton. Corals get their vibrant colors and much of their food from symbiotic algae living inside their tissues. This makes coral reefs a great spot to snorkel and see all the amazing sea life!

One of the absolute best parts of being out on the water in Grand Cayman? The wildlife. From friendly stingrays to colorful reef fish, there’s always something magical swimming nearby. If you’re wondering what you might spot on a private charter with us at Cayman Kind Watersports — here’s your quick guide to some of our favorite marine locals.

Southern Stingrays – The Stars of Stingray City

If there’s one animal you have to meet while you’re here, it’s the southern stingray. These gentle giants glide right up to you in the shallow sandbar at Stingray City, where they’re known to be friendly and super social. They’re soft, calm, and kind of like the ocean’s puppies.

Fun fact: Stingrays use their wings to “fly” through the water, and they can live over 15 years in the wild.

Sea Turtles – The Laid-Back Locals

There’s nothing quite like watching a sea turtle gracefully paddle through crystal-clear water. Green sea turtles are the most common around Grand Cayman, and if you’re lucky, you might see one coming up for air or cruising near the reefs.

Starfish – Shallow Water Superstars

Over at Starfish Point, you’ll find these beautiful bright red and orange cushion starfish resting along the sandy bottom in shallow water. They’re big, photogenic, and totally chill — just remember: look, don’t lift! Starfish need to stay underwater to breathe.

Reef Fish – Like Snorkeling Through a Painting

When you snorkel the coral reefs, get ready for a burst of color. You’ll see parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, and blue tangs darting between brain coral and sea fans. It’s like swimming inside a tropical aquarium — except it’s all real.

Moray Eels – The Shy Ones in the Rocks

Okay, we know “eel” sounds a little spooky — but moray eels are actually super cool (and usually just hiding out in crevices, peeking at the action). You might spot a green moray’s head poking out of the coral, mouth opening and closing — that’s just how they breathe!
